Vonthic Thdukr

Mountain Guide and Hunter

History

Born in a hard delivery, the sixth child of Dueror and Falin, never knew his father or mother. The hard living in the Stony Mountains never gave any quarter. Being a late child, Vonthic was raised by his brother, Vathgal, a hunter after their father. Having time on his own, and being in the wilds, lead to Vonthic being at home in the wilds. Learning to read from a Kobald and befriending his son Kekk didn't help keep Vonthic to the normal paths of Dwarf life.
By the time Vathgal got around to teaching Vonthic how to hunt, two things were obvious. Vonthic knew the wilds better than his brother, and the wild ideas of equality and justice did not sit well with the rough back mountain dwarvin ways. Vathgal got Vonthic into a clock making apprenticeship. Vonthic did well enough until his ability to charm got him out of the clocking making business and into real rebellion.
Vonthic got caught up with an idealistic group who thought that Dwarves, Kobalds, Elves, Humans, and hell any one in the rough mountains should live in peace to make a better life for all of them. Vonthic was a great aid in the moment, both in convincing others of the ideas and later hiding from the leaders of the clans who wanted things the way they were. During these years Vonthic become a Ranger. Finding caves and encampments keeping the 'Together we are strong' movement lingering for years. At the very end, he used his charm to get exile and not an axe to the neck. Leaving with Kekk, he heads to Riddleport.

Journal

Session 2

Combat starts after someone yells out “If you don’t do any thing stupid, I might let you live.” Well I don’t like the might part and I’m thinking an arrow into the man who said that is a smart thing to so. My arrow bounces off of a magical shield. Damn! A second shot and the same thing. Bastard! It’s good to see the people I were with all have the same good idea that I have. The guy causes something to open with magic and the caged demon is free.

Some on from across the way causes something to shrink. I notice the chest is shrunk, but I got this grathank to hit at least once. People start running away out of the front doors. I get a clear and easy shot. The shot is nearly perfect and it just bounces off of the magic. I’m pissed now. Well then the other person, a teethling, finishes off the man. Time to take on the demon. Did I really think that?

Well luckily everyone is tied up, dead or fled. We are seen as the heroes as the guards were all horrible. The owner, Saul, talks with us, about a job. I mention I’m not one of the inside. He says I can do promotions. Meh, I was just doing a good thing. The Angvar, the wizard, had come by before and scoped things out.

Saul tries to recruit us into working for the gambling hall. He goes into how he used to be a gang. He wants to legit by running a gambling hall. What an odd idea. Fools taking money from fools; my hope for the world is being tested. Saul goes on about profit sharing, 10gp a week unless the place looses money. I’m not sure about all of this. The people who stood up tonight seem like a decent lot to start up with. I really am not sure to do with myself. So why not see what sort of shit hole this is and how I can help them out. How to help fools being foolish if they find happiness. I talk with this group, as I look to see if there are anything bad happening. Besides the gate over the harbor is very interesting. Jamis has a good mind on him. I’m damn emotional really. We agree to help out for a while and see what we can do to make things better. This city has freedom but not justice. I want justice for all. Oh, so many people define freedom so different. How to be free to do what you want and also be safe enough to no fear issues?

We go to talk to the prisoner. I try to charm one and it doesn’t work. The others get to work. They do the typical, nice guy and two mean looking guys. That worked well. The two grunts know nothing and Barabio tells us that the guy on the dock is a fence. I think this was just a nice way to shutdown this place to get this open. At least this town has some police.

We go down to the dock and don’t find any one. I sneak down the dock and look around. We don’t see anyone. We attempt to hide as a group and wait. Nothing happens and we head back after a few hours. On our way back I hear about seagulls. They start all fly away, and that is very weird. They are being sucked into the blot in the sky. The blot circles a rune on the cypher gate. The birds all hit the gate where the rune is and then fall into the sea. We get back to our room and sleep.

The next morning, Saul says we can reopen tonight. We’ll work on getting people in to the place. I make some clock work signage to enhance the look from the outside.

Clinch Zingler is in the bar. He runs the blood sport place. Saul has me get the group working on finding out why he is in the place. I tell the other people in my group with this. I go back up to the catwalk and keep an eye on him. Apparently he is checking out the place and who is working there.

After the place closes there is a shriek and a maid is found dead in the kitchen from a poison viper bite. I dispatch the snake.

Session 3

I work with Kyree to improve the locks with my skills. They also will put a ward to put the lock pick to sleep and alarm. I also want to go to the Mage School to practice my Thasalonian.

The business does well and we get a bonus. The problem being that I spent more than I got back, but I should pay off next week

Kyree and I go to the cyphermages. We cross the river and walk up. It’s a nice part of town. I talk with a mage and talk over about joining. I decide to join. I talk up the Golden Goblin having a cyphermage night. I also talk up wanting to know more about ancient places that I visit as a ranger.

Saul makes us partners in the golden goblin. Some morning there is a knock is at the door. Standing there is an elf woman, Samritha Beldusk, talking about a job. She is a mage and from Magamar.

I upgrade the sign outside and search every bit of the place to check for secret doors. I start in the basement with Jamis. In the wine cellar we find a set of old foot prints that leads to the middle of fighting pit. We find the floor is odd in the middle. There is a man hole with big key mechanism and it looks like Saul’s hand.

Saul was going out to look for Larur with a 500 gp payment to Lymas Smeed. Larur was sent out after closing. Larur works down at the gas works. We head out to Larur’s place. One of the people following us is working on a magical disguise. The blot gets bigger and causes to make it look like there is an overcast sky. It looks like some people start glowing purple. This includes a person following us. It seems to be casting detect magic on the world. The magic is a mist and flowing up to the blot. It takes about half an hour for this to go away. We get to his apartment and the door looks like it’s been forced open. Jamis notes it was opened by an axe. I sneak in and look around. I notice that the people are not dwarves who did the trashing about. I find all the dwarven obvious places to keep things. There are 300 gp of gems/gold/heirlooms. I hold on to them. Jones finds a track. We follow them to a cart. We follow the cart. Even after all this time I can track it regardless and it head up to the mountain pass.

Past the mountains the cart goes down south in to the marsh. Nature again, it has been too long! On some rigging we see a flickering light and through the mist some shapes can be seen along the base of the boat. I move along the cart to flank the people with my bow. I go through the water and then notice a body covered in the cart. I move up to the cart. The animal handler, BoJask is sitting there and had his throat is ripped out by animals. I see a piece of paper and pick it up. I hear something and look up form the cryptic letter and am attacked. A rat thing hits me. I shove the letter in my shirt.

I look up and hawk comes down to attack of the rat. I’m surrounded by so much but I can see is that rat thing that hit me and I strike back. I step back and shoot my bow for a miss. I need to calm down and focus! The hawk has metal weapons on his talons. The two rat things stand back up and I take another shot at them and then nothing happens. Another shot. This is just bad. I felt useful tracking but I just can’t hit a damn thing. One surrendered, but Joe attacks anyways. Must be protecting his master. Another one surrenders as well. The bigger master does not let up. I hit him soundly! My arrow just bounces off!

These rat things are warerats.

Session 5

We sleep after the events of last time. We have a deed on a place with one of the most dangerous people in town wanting because it was collateral on a big loan.

We go into the pit after the door is propped up.. I repel down quickly and stand guard. It opens up into another pit and the air is very moist. Five feet below in the next hole there is water. Darling crawls and slips. I grab him and he gets a look in the water. He then tries to crawl up and he slips again. I let go as to not make this worse. I then catch my myself and Darling looks at me, his head looking up out of the hole and tells me “I meant to do that” I give him a dirty look and ask for him to help me down. I go down into cave and keep an eye as others catch up. I move down the passageway and keep an eye out. I go down the left and find that it dead ends in a pool of water. I step up and look down. I see fish and it appears to be connected to the rest of the water and smells brackish and swampish. I move back and Kyree motions that there are four something down the hallway. Then I see the undead something attack Kyree. I get hit by the undead. I drop my bow and pull my axe. Darling trys to pull me back and I say I’m holding the line. He says he can’t die, but how can I move back when the cave is so crowded. I take an attack and miss. I move back and hold my shot. Kekk tells me to not shoot the one he is controlling. I wait as celestial dogs take care of things.

Agna takes care of my wounds and the drained powered. I am worried about what created these things. This can just happen because so there is more than likely no creator. We then move along and find the wright nest. We search and don’t find too much. A glass vile, lock, dire flail, vile, hooded lantern (of good quality), vile, a long spear, kukri, a blue quartz, hematite, obsidian, blue quartz, and a turquoise. There is a backpack of coins with an ivory scroll case and a small wooden box. I carry the coins in the back pack in a sack so I don't get more dirty or wright miasma on me. We move ahead and see a purple glow. We move on but I become worried. Undead are simply unnerving. Luckily the glow is from crystal. I’m told they are caphorite crystals. Very sharp crystals. We make it across the purple crystal room and see large mirrors. We then make it into a cavern of decent size. On the far side something have been excavated. It’s a big pillar covered in thealonian runes. We then hear “You must be Saul’s latest batch of victims.” She must be a dark elf. She starts talking about how it’s too late and how we will fail in saving our world. We attack. I shoot and miss. I look at the desk and see several vials. She moves up the pillar, impressive. She summons two demons from the ground. One of them breathes out a cloud of stink. I brush it off; I’ve smelled worse. I then take a good shot. I hit the bitch and she slumps to the ground. Finally a hit just like I make when I’m training! The demons fall. I search the table and the desk in more detail. I search the desk and find journal in an unknown language, viles of ink, quill pens, and chisel and hammer of adminantie. The glyph is both in Thessalonian and abyssal. I climb up the gate and look around.

I climb up and find that I am in at the base of the arch. The blotch is gone. I climb back down. We talk over what we find and what to do. Agna finds that some of the runes glow. We decipher it to mean arc from the sky. We head back up and look at the arch glowing. We see a rock fall and hit south of the town. I head back to golden goblin once I realize that Acronis is right about the tidal wave. The water pulls back from bay. We see a bulge of water coming after the water. We climb up into the roof. If it were not for the death it would be the best thing ever.

Session 6

The water rises up to 5 feet on the Golden Goblin. We wait for the water to pour back out. What to do? I just start looking for people and then looking for bodies. It’s grim work, but it’s what I just need to do. I keep the hammer and the chisel until after the disaster to talk with the Runemages. I bring it up my teammates. They agree, but want to read the journal first to see if we should. It sounds prudent, but I doubt anything would stop this. They want to talk to Quava first. Why not? My team members seem particularly untrusting as if everyone is just out for all that they can get.

Quava will get in touch with his superiors and he thinks it ok for the rune mages to take a look. I see no harm in it. A bird comes by and lets us know that they are interested in what we can recover. Don’t mention drow to anyone.

Skymetal, people are going out on expeditions to get what they can get. Some serious people are going to look for it.

Samarithra is going on the runemage’s to keep an eye on them. Acronis pulls her aside and we can’t get on to the runemage’s boat. We look at the other boats and go with another boat. It’s the Flying Cloud, the fastest boat in the harbor. We all agree to help out with magic or our labor. I get 7 people times 3 trail rations with some wondermeals. 107 silver – total

We have a meal on the Flying Cloud. It’s cramped and we are all on our best behavior. He asks if we are worried about Virashi’s curse. Bad things just happened when people tried to settle there. No one lives there now, but people claim to see things. Acronis hears something durning dinner. We go up on deck and I see thugs. I shoot twice and kill on on the other end of the ship. Joe kills another one. The others are coming up and there are two other thugs left. I shoot rhe reamaing one on the dock and miss. The rest of the thugs die or get captured. I guard Agna as she tends to the crew. The crew were just unconscious. I find out later that this was a job from zincher. I’ll need to remember that name.
