DnD:AnimalPlanet:Sadian Day1
From RainGamersWiki
Day One
The group has returned from their trip to the mainland with the ancient map of the Labyrinth of BART. As part of the spoils, Sadian has a 4-point rack from a steer which he begins to turn into a Lyre. Kohana attempts to deal with the crafters for a suit of leather armor, in exchange for repairing their tools. A bargain is struck, though the ritual means 2 of the 8 tools are consumed. There is a vague promise to replace them
There is little rest as we are summoned to the Council. Our appearance makes no one happy, as there is an argument in process. Badger angry at Jackel, Coyote is smirking, Fox & Lynx unhappy with everyone, except perhaps the Wildcats. Civette [the Lynx representative] addresses the group, assigning us the task to explore Midpoint island to verify it is safe for the future colony. The assignment is presented with reluctance which prompts Maya to ask if we were not the best choice. Civette says our abilities are not in question. Insight on my part, shows that Civette thinks this a waste of time, not we are the wrong group. I do not share this yet, as the presence of the Council would make that hazardous. Lucan makes a comment that could be seen as a challenge to the Coyote council member, but is given a rather dismissive answer. ((OOC - Shinite asks his elder about the Council dealings, but is merely told to beware of the Jackal & Coyote)). Even though it is night, we asked to leave immediately, and are taken by boat to Mid Point Island. In order to facilitate pick-up, the Council gives us a flare gun to signal if needed. Kohana suggest Animal Messenger when we are ready to return, as to converse resources. The Wolf shows wisdom.
((OOC: Midpoint island – Oakland span is still up.))
The main section of Treasure Island is underwater, leaving only the buildings of the ancients exposed. Some of them have collapsed into the water. After a long journey, we are land on the northern end. There is a great stone path heading up the island. Our immediate need is shelter & rest. Looking for defensible location, Lucan scouts a seemingly abandoned building, only to discover a pack of 6 wild dogs. As he retrieves his longbow, the dogs are alerted to his presence. He fires off two arrows at the Alpha, then retreating after they miss their mark. The Alpha & Beta charge Lucan, inflicting severe wounds on the Coyote ranger. Hecheto heals the damage with a mighty blessing. Inyan charges forward to intercept the rest of the pack that is pouring out of the building. I distract the Beta, making her focus on the Paladin. Lucan recovers and bloodies the Alpha with a powerful bow shot. Maya uses Crow Swoop to distract the Alpha away from the harried archer. Kohana hinders the approaching pack with a burst of cold, bringing their numbers down to 3. The Alpha & Beta attack ineffectually. Kohana & Inyan continue to whittle away at the Pack, but one gets away to bite me (9 pts). Alpha manages to chew on Maya, but the Beta continues to be ineffective. Hecheto uses Divine Globe to boost her allies, healing Maya. The last pack member is brought down by Inyan. Shinte sees an opportune moment to backstab the Alpha, finishing off the creature. Hunts End doesn't on the Beta. Maya condemns the Beta with Paladin's Judgement [Heal me for 7 pts] & inflicting a severe wound. As the Beta turns to flee, Shinte acts an the opportunity to end the fight with a knife thrust.
With the pack of dogs dead, they are butchered for the meat & the company rests for the evening
Day Two
As morning dawns, the group heads up the path, into the forest & upwards towards the highest point to survey the island. Kohana & Inyan hear a faint growling in the distance, which Kohana give a tentative identity as a bear. None of the People have seen a bear to our knowledge, increasing the tension. Lucan smells smoke, which turns out to be a log smoldering on the beach. There is no evidence of People, so the incident is written off as a lightning strike. As we near the top of the island, Hechto, Kohana, & myself smell seawater from a tunnel that disappears downward into the hill. Given the location and the lack of proximity to the beach, this is a very odd occurrence. We make note of it to investigate later. We approach the second, upper tunnel, seeing signs of large animal having made it a den. Sign is everywhere & deep claw marks are apparent everywhere. Perhaps this is the lair of the legendary Bear? Lighting up the tunnel we see vehicles pushed off to the side & used as punching bags by the den's inhabitant. The den goes back about 50 yards before collapsing into rubble. Kohana tries to scavenge one of the vehicles, but must enlist the aid of Maya and Inyan. It proves to be jammed shut & only the lucky find of an old jack allows them to access the boot. After some effort the boot is opened & a battery is retrieved. The whole process creates a great deal of noise and preparation is made to ambush the den's owner when they come back.
The Bear appears, crashing to the ground in front of the cave from above! Kohana panics, screaming like a cub. The sight of the creature is impressive, nearly twice our height with the cubs being as tall. How the Ancient Humans with such a thing roaming around is a wonder. Maya leaps in w/ Crow's Swoop, hitting with a solid blow to get the Bear's attention. I mock the monster to weaken and distract it from harming our brave fighters. Kohana uses fire to singe the Bear and cubs, catching Shinte in the blast. Shinte plants his dagger into the Bear's flank and then scoots out of the fire to avoid being burned severely. Our attacks barely distract or harm the creature, while it cannot harm Inyan or Maya with its giant claws. Kohana's fire kills the both baby bears, driving the Bear into a frenzy of rage. Maya's Divine Judgement bloodies the Bear sending her further into a rage. Her frenzied attacks leave both Maya and Shinte wounded, requiring me to heal Maya while Hecheto helps her fellow Fox. Lucan's arrows find the weak point, hastening the creature closer to death. (Hunt's End does big damage) A final mock distracts the Bear to allow Lucan a clear shot to end the Bear's life. As we recover from the battle, an inspection of the group shows that none of us are hurt and a short rest brings us back to full health.
While the Bear is reduced to meat and fur, I claim an incisor and two of the claws. They will make excellent gifts upon my return to the Island.
