Day Three – The Island
Night descends as we setup camp and I place a ward to guard our rest. While the Word keeps us safe, having a pair of real eyes to watch over us is useful. In the morning, our exploration of the large building finds a room with a pool of water. A number of dead rats lie in the water, making it unsafe to drink. They are also oddly burned. Kohana and Shinte determine that this is a lightning trap, perhaps set by the ancients to guard their room. The room proves to be interesting with Kohana thinking that he can bring one of the ancient machines to life again. Of more interest is the mass of papers that could hold secrets of the ancient Humans. But for now, we continue our exploration of the island.
It soon becomes apparent that the rest of the island is deserted and the remaining structures have been destroyed by fires long past. That leaves only the Great Span that connects to the mainland. Access to the Span is gained with ease. We choose the middle lane to travel, but are soon blocked by a pile of the ancient mobile dens. Not to be discouraged, we work our way around them, traveling on one of the wider spans.
Danger is never far, as we encountered a nest of of poisonous rattlers and large constrictors. A normal threat compared to the previous day, but no less dangerous. Did the Council understood or knew the dangers that were lurking here when we were sent forth? The rogue Shinte was worse for wear during the combat, having presented a tempting targeting to the constrictors. Many times we were forced to rescue him from the coils, though it gave him opportunity to inflict wounds upon our quarry. The rattlers died first, though their poison took some toil upon Lucan. It was luck that I had a number of antidotes to administer to him. Their rattles will make an excellent addition to my lyre or drum. Our fight against the constrictors was slightly longer, but in the end we were victorious. The Word came in handy many times during the fight, as I was able to lure the snakes into Inyan's blade and help Shinte escape the coils more than once.
Reaching the end of the Great Span proved the long walk and danger was worth the effort. The water abounds with fish and the land teems with game. There are places to build new shelters and if needed, a defense to block access to the Great Span. Being able to setup our hunters on this island would save the People a great deal of travel time by water to send food back to Home. The Council should be very pleased.
We return to the island and the strange room with water pool. Kohana wants to use some of the "batteries" to bring the "UPS" to life. To what end I do not quite understand, but he seems to think that there are books in the ancient Human devices. It seems like an addled idea, but I did not see him take any strikes to the head. With a bit of coaxing and some arcane words, he manages to bring the "UPS" to life and in turn summons one of machine spirits of the ancient Humans. Kohana requests that I document his actions in case of his demise. I find this both amusing and disturbing as I would have expected a bit more wisdom and caution. I do understand the lure of knowledge and hope that he doesn't stray over the edge. The Machine Spirit seems to have a will of its own, speaking in a strange tongue and Kohana responding in kind. Both Kalisca and Lucan show concern about this in their own ways. She attempts to banish the spirit, but only makes it distort. Lucan draws his bow and points it at Kohana demanding to know if he was possessed. As if a Spirit possessing Kohana would tell the truth. In the end, Lucan pulls the lightning cord and banishes the Machine Spirit to the void. We make camp with the intention upon returning Home the next day.
Day Four
The Wildcats are good on their word and respond quickly to the message. They are subdued, perhaps being on land makes them nervous, but no matter. Upon landing the Council requests our immediate attendance and tale. I relate our tale to the Council, giving emphasis to the Bear Mother, the Deep Ones [and the possibility that they might be remaining humans], and the odd Machine Spirit. While the Council seems pleased, I believe that they did not expect such a successful report. Or perhaps our return was not expected. If this is a fool's errand, I must consider this more.
