Session 13 - 03/21/10
Kohana can understand the speech, though I have to cast the ritual to understand it. As the ritual is finished & the door opens to reveal the strangely dressed creature. I approach and give the greeting to a superior. The creature is tall for the People wearing a full covered white suit w/ a strange helmet, muzzle, & eye coverings. 47 years since he had seen another living soul, but he is 51st birthday. Probably not the most well adjusted people. Mentions the plague [80-90 years ago], this was a safe place to avoid the plague. Most died due to isolation & pining away. He has no idea what the outside world is like. There is also mention that the plague will change humans into monsters. An offer of help is suggested & he is running low on supplies & requests that we help resupply. Kohana brings out an I-pad & the human mentions they are PDA.
I do a round of introductions, he responds with his name is Charles. The generators is going & his filters are going, he may not last very much longer. For being alone, he is still quite intact if a bit daft. Lucan suggests that he ignore him & move on to other tasks. He would like to try vegetables, apples, vitamins - has enough meat. Charles knows of a place called the Community Garden & would like us to check it out. Explain that we would like to know the workings of spirit boxes, maps, wax, and any books he is willing to share. Charles returns with a sheet of paper and an i-Pod w/ a Google map. We have no reference on veges. He gives us the i-Pad but it will not respond to the claws but works with the pad. There's a significant input time. Once outside the building it will revert to "dead reckoning". The battery life is limited to 16 hours & the device should be used sparingly. If we find a way to generate power, then we can recharge it. We transcribe the e-map to the book map to preserve battery life.
He doesn't worship any of the human Gods [Tyvek or EEKA], but offers us the place to camp. Our daily message to the Council will include a note that we found what might be the last living unchanged human via Sending. After camping for the night, we head out towards the garden through the ruined city. Our travel down Market St is remarkably clear with all the mobile dens having been pushed off to the side. We head up a hill on Fell St & at the top find a forest spread out before us. Nature has reclaimed part of the city if force. In the thermals I see large birds [Condors], but no sign of the Harpies. Lots of old growth forest & destroyed buildings. As we pass by a nest of wild turkeys, we hear from the north a ringing bell [low deep note], it is deliberate action. Inyan climbs the tree to investigate and sees a tall building w/ two spires to the north. Lucan notes bear marks on the trees. Just as we enter a clearing, there's an ambush which we spot just in time. These are plant creatures that look like tree stumps wrapped with vines.
Kohana immobilizes the first creature & casts cold on the second, which burrows into the ground. The creatures grab with rubbery vines & then bites, to poison Maya with alarming speed. Kohana flips around area, keeping out of the reach, though Maya is caught in one creature's tentacles stumbling under the onslaught & needing the WORD to revive. Lucan harries one with arrow fire, as he too moves around the field of battle. Inyan smacks both creatures in a passing attack, while Maya drives one forward. Kohana manages to fell the wounded one with a burst of cold after many arrows. After a bit of more combat, the last tree falls. After a short rest, we move on, heading towards to the open area.
Moving on, Lucan finds some semi-intact buildings which we note as a possible camp. As the woods thin out, there's a saltwater swamp in a bowl, the remnants of a lake. Suggested heading south around the swamp to avoid the muck & mire. Inyan climbs to check our location, finding a raised up pathway that we traverse. At the end is are field of golden stalks with large hairy creatures with wicked horns standing 6' at the shoulder. Further to the north, there's another forest that is not attached. We continue into the field of grains, avoiding the prey & predators. Our trek is uneventful, reaching the garden in short order. We manage to fulfill most of the list, though much is unripe. However, there's a patch of the catnip which I roll around in for a bit, enjoying it greatly. Feeling really really mellow. I harvest a large bit to take back with me [purely for medicinal reasons & a -8 to Perception].
We return to the buildings that were partially overgrown by the vines.
