Description

Maya is a jackal of dark topaz-colored fur. His head hair and tail are brick red; he wears his hair in a long ponytail.

Maya wears scale armor with scales made of grey metal and bindings inlaid with blue. At his belt is the sign of the Raven Queen. He wields a glaive with a leaf-shaped blade and a weighted pommel on the butt. He also carries a knife.

His name means "He who pushes you off a cliff", which is an ancient phrase also meaning "fate".

Unlike many of his clan, Maya does not run from a fight and he never has. Some call it bravery, but it is not the bravery for bravery's sake of the badger nor the mania of the wildcat. He simply takes every fight (even those he starts) as a personal insult. And since he is a devout servant of the goddess of death, he means to be the one to end any fight that begins.

Outside of battle, he can be brash and boorish at times, but he is not a stranger to a good time. Even though some of those good times may actually not be all that fun for the one who does get pushed off of the cliff. Ribbing and practical jokes are his way of showing affection.

Whatever his situation, he is first and foremost a protector of the pack. If he sees you as a member of his erstwhile pack, he will protect you without a second thought. It is beyond loyalty to him -- it is the way it must be. The Raven Queen protects the dead; the strong in life must protect the living. Questioning it or complimenting him on a daring rescue baffles him. The People could not exist without protectors.

History

Maya was born into a lesser clan, Anapokangi, to parents who did not have much to offer. But the clan is a strong one, and it was the whole clan that raised Maya.

Maya was a curious child, curious about the world and its inhabitants, why they came into the world and then left it, where those who came before have all gone, and why one does what one does during their time here.

He was also precocious, always climbing fences he should not, listening in on conversations he should not, pestering other children and the wild ones until they lashed out, to find out which rules were bendable and which were breakable.

Later, when he made his first kill, he saw something flash in the rabbit's eyes as it reached the threshold -- as if he could glimpse the reflection of the universe in that moment in its eyes.

After consulting with an elder, he realized it was the Raven Queen peering back at him from the realm of death. At that moment, he began to pursue a life as her valiant servant.

His training is now complete.

What's the Deal with Maya?

Anapokangi are born scrappers. Often low in the hierarchy, they learn that boons are to be fought for and savagely defended. The spirit of the crow shadows that of the jackal -- ornery, brash scavengers.
