Mulwrit’s Journal – 18th of New Year

I am starting this journal to collect my thoughts on my companions and our actions since we have arrived in Ptolus. The dream that drew me here seems to have been misleading, perhaps the sending of a malevolent entity or an indifferent god. While there is a crisis in the city, it would appear that my companions are more concerned about personal agendas and power grabs than helping others. While I am a mercenary by trade, there are rules and laws that even I do not cross. To do so would make me little more than a bandit or random thug that waylays innocents from an alley.

On our trip back to the surface, Otto began to discuss the various criminal enterprises around the city and how they would be much better run under different supervision. More specifically, he mentioned one of the larger crime families and the fact that they needed to be taken down and the operations taken over, with Otto being the natural leader. He spouted this off in range of others that were not part of our group, but he paid little heed to warnings and kept prattling on how things would be so much better. A tyrant is a tyrant, no matter how you try to whitewash it. Afterwards, we continued on our way back up to the surface, taking a rest to recover upon reaching the inn.

The next day started out well, recovering from our trip into the lower areas of the city and the clearing out of hobgoblins and other less savory creatures. In discussing what we should do, the subject of the missing girl [Phon] was brought up, but dismissed as irrelevant with her character being called into question [as being called a slut & a whore by a lesser member of the party]. Instead, I was tasked with finding more places to search in order to clear out more vermin and such. At least I can feel good about ridding the city of the non-human garbage. I should work on the ones that walk on the streets rather than just those that lurk beneath it.

A summons from Lord Purple arrived, inviting us to lunch to discuss business. The others seem to value his patronage, so it was accepted. I used this as an excuse to purchase more presentable clothing, not that I think the Lord would notice. Upon our arrival, his Lordship was upset that word of our deeds in regards to the drug smuggler [the late Mr. Cran] leaked out and that he was now being blackmailed. A person contacted the Lord about the gold statue we recovered. This individual claimed to have a cure for the Lord’s friend who is currently the aforementioned status. Lord Purple seemed to think we had been careless in our actions & let information slip into the wrong hands or perhaps ear. Perhaps there is some truth, but more likely was that this rogue knew of the statue, its former owner [the late Mr. Cran], and the Lord’s connection to it. The dots are easy to connect in this case.

Otto spouted reassurances that the situation would be taken care of. Lord Purple was not impressed and a bit on edge with Otto, whose tongue did not seem soothe the Lord’s outrage/anger. Perhaps it was not being used in the right manner. Grundric did point out that there were possible witnesses to our exploits. Lord Purple was very interested in this and asked why this was not explained earlier. Otto feigned ignorance and later threatened Grundric with violence, not entirely a wise move as the Dwarf is an excellent shot with a bow and “accidents” happen in the heat of battle. Otto maybe able to talk his circles around self-important Lords and the clueless, but some of us are not that impressed or taken. Such as when he tried to convince me of how right his line of thinking in regards to becoming a Crimelord.

Both Cheval and Kekitat have been silent on the matters of late, keeping their own council on the matters at hand. Still, there is much I do not like about this and the importance being placed on pleasing some Lord that could care less for our well-being or existence. As my companions seem to be bent on exploiting others or just standing aside & doing nothing, perhaps I will take a more direct hand in things. Tomorrow I will check on a matter that has been ignored and seek confirmation that the missing girl is connected to something more sinister and important than Lord Purple’s bidding.

On an unrelated note, I need to speak to innkeeper on current night’s disturbance. Some idiot brought his lady friend back to the inn & made enough noise to wake the dead. While I understand the need for companionship, I certainly did not need to hear the details, especially her preferences on where he should be sticking it.
