Description

Rather social for a fox, Iktomi seems to have a rather calming manner about him. His voice is soft and his movements fluid. He enjoys spending time with others but also has moments where he prefers solitude (and no one seems to have found any of his hiding spots).

History

Many moons ago, Shinte Iktomi was put in the world. He had been the answered prayers of his mother and father who had tried to have a kit for years and were approaching surrender and acceptance of a fate without having any of their own young. From birth it was obvious he would make up for their lack of luck for he had a certain aura about him that left all around him smiling.

In his youth he spent most of his days showing off his talents at sneaking and hiding. Games of hide and go seek often devolved into all searching for him within the first part of the day, and some nights would fall before he'd be found, and often only because he had bravely returned home to try to get some food in him.

In adolescence he was finally given some responsibility. His father, who sits on the Council, asked Shinte to begin involving himself with the Council itself, though only in the manner of being a greeter and occasionally fetching food and drink. His social nature and quiet step made him perfect for the role and his quick wit allowed him to learn what was appropriate.

After a few years, he found himself returned to the old games of hide and seek, though this time in a more professional manner. Gathering parties were being planned and his stealth was well known so his inclusion was a given.

EPISODE 1

We have returned from the investigation of the underground labyrinth across the water. I didn't get to see much of anything new, but at least I was able to get to where the horizon normally ends. But my hopes are raised again as soon as we return as the Council has requested we return to the large island off to the South! They have hopes of creating a new settlement there. I like this idea as there seems to be so much more food and space off of our own. The river of stone that lies above the water might make it too easy for invasion by any foul creatures, but the Council is wise to this and have hopes it can be destroyed or defended.

We waste no time and depart immediately, but not before I get a chance to speak with Father regarding this plan. He is suspiciously quiet about the matter but tells me to not trust the jackal or coyote. As I don't want to draw attention to our exchange that might show any nepotism being practiced by the Council I avoid asking questions. But does he means my friends with which I travel? Or does he mean those members of the Council? Surely not my friends, Lucan and Maya...

On the boat ride over, I ponder what could have left the Council split on this idea. It seems quite wise to me. Why would we not take the opportunity to try to get a second den set up for us all? The island grows quite small and crowded, I only have a few dozen hiding places remaining...

Our landing is stealthy and we're able to breach land with no issues. Lucan ventures to a stone den where he is scented by a pack of wild dogs which we dispatch easily enough and make it a temporary den of our own and rest.

The morning sun reveals just how thick the forest is. Fortunately, there are the rivers of stone so many travelers have seen when they leave the island, so the ground is easy to traverse and stealth is easy to maintain. I see an odd sight, a still burning log on the shore. I see no sign of what may have set it ablaze though. It couldn't have been lightning. Hopefully I will find the source of this mystery before long.

Our travels continue on and the rivers of stone intermingle and span across one another. The one that leads to the larger river that spans across the waters seems to now be the den of a bear. Knowing when to hide, I find myself a spot near the entrance while the others investigate. Sure enough, the bear appears as they investigate. And make many many very loud noises. I've never seen such a beast! All of my training proves helpful though and we quickly dispatch the bear, but not without major injury. I have never hurt to such an intense level in my life! But now I know why to hide in the shadows, and now also know that I must continue to practice this much if I am to see more of the world!

EPISODE 2

I seem to have a memory block... perhaps it was seeing Maya almost die, but every time I close my eyes and try to recall it all I can think of is ... "sushi" ... whatever that is.

EPISODE 3

This strange magical device, which held a lightning trap guarding it, seemed to capture the attention of Kohana. It was risky but the mystery made it hard to resist. I only ventured into the room a little, to watch, but unfortunately we had to surrender the effort to unlock the device. It theoretically holds an entire library inside of it, or perhaps it unlocks the door to a library. Despite being very detailed in my search, I was unable to find any door or switch in the upper floor. Perhaps it is underground?

But we had a mission to accomplish and we must remain focused! The large stone pathway above the water was definitely serviceable. Unfortunate since this means creatures and harm bringers could use it to breech the island if we were to colonize it... but on the other side, it was as dad had said, there were so many animals and so much life that if we could safely reach there we'd feast and thrive! Unfortunately this pathway itself seemed to be inhabited by snakes. Mercilessly they attacked with such deft movements that I had absolutely no ability to escape their strikes. But that also kept them still which allowed me to strike back with precision and penetrate the hard scales. I feasted upon the heart of the strongest of them.

After surviving the combat, we made our way back to the building, pulling magic boxes from the humans' carts along the way. It was Kohana's aim to use these to revive the gate holder to the library, or the library itself, and it seemed to work. Unfortunately, it also seemed to only speak to Kohana and this set the coyote, Lucan, on edge. After a tense moment, we decided to report to the Council.

The report was told well. Sadian's tale revealed our bravery and the riches we found, but the Council seemed far more affected by the news than I had anticipated. Or perhaps just more negatively than I expected. I took particular note that they were the most discomforted at the mention of the human like creatures we stumbled across. Did we not expect to find any ever? Those animals had been all over, there had to be SOME left, no?

EPISODE 4

It seems odd to me. The Council did not seem at all impressed by our abilities. It was more than just the human creatures too. I slipped into one of the meetings and was able to listen to most of it before being spied and learned that they are unhappy that we're doing so well. They fear the loss of their own control it would seem. This isn't the Council I knew as I grew up! I didn't hear my own father's take on the matter though, so hopefully he might yet steer them to see wisdom. It is not right that they should worry at all about their own being and power when we are nearing the point of struggling to survive.

Still, they sent us out on a mission. I stayed quiet. Mother Moon has taught me one needn't reveal all they know and feel, and this would be the time to keep much in the shadows. My own lifelong friends with whom I now travel seem wise to the ways as well. The Winds are blowing strong and perhaps with our own growing power we can direct them to what is right and good. So off we went, ready to live out a story about finding resources and goods for the people at "IKEA"... but the story we're building will likely be different.

Our landing was safe and easy. We were able to get all the way to the large land across the water where the sun rises with no incident. Our first wanderings revealed to us very large metal dens which could also be used to secure the rock pathway rising above the water back to the large island, or serve as dens themselves.

Then fate shined upon us. Massive pools of water, and some other alchemical reagent in some of them, were nearby as well! They seem to have a violent mushroom-human creature living there but they are easy to dispatch. It is too bad that they do not seem edible. Still, we're quickly getting to a point where we may have all we need to build the People a new den'ing area!

EPISODE 5

We made it to the massive den called IKEA. It seemed guarded by a complex door which had an associated lightning trap, but we quickly sorted out the details and were able to slip inside. Within laid near-paradise! So many materials and goods The People could use that I lost track. Instruments for digging, planting, hunting and building shelter... not to mention that this massive den itself would serve as an excellent den. Lucan again seemed agitated saying having so much given to us would make us soft and we'd forget how to hunt and survive. I'm very confused about this. We'd still have to hunt, but aren't we always looking for appropriate dens? This would let our people thrive much more than the creations we have back on the island.

I have collected just a bit. I found that the humans had made maps of this massive den and had sticks with which one could draw. So I took much of these maps and writing materials.

Still, paradise it is not quite, as outside were quite fierce creatures which nearly killed me. I don't know what's come over me as of late, but I've been charging forward and defending the pack instead of hiding. Perhaps it's because they never seem likely to run from a challenge so I'd know I'd just be leaving them to potential doom. Still, they saw after me as well with their healing skills and excellent fighting capabilities.

After such a fierce battle we all agreed on a long rest to heal our wounds.

EPISODE 6

More of those metal creatures came after us outside of "IKEA". They spoke that odd language that Kohana and Sadian know from the old days of humans. I really must learn it. They weren't very powerful, fortunately, but they also aren't edible so the battle yielded us little. Though perhaps we're making the shore safer for the rest?

A raven bearing a message for Sadian informed us that Koliska was needed to take the place of the Council member for the wildcats. Rather surprising and another twist in the plot of the Council. Most of us seem to be of the same mindset, and even Lukan seemed less intense than usual, that being the Council is still not to be trusted but so long as we're providing for the people then we're doing the right thing. Still, it turned out that the Council IS approving of some of the people moving to the island and there's efforts to secure the 'bridge' at the end nearest the island itself. Apparently they wildcat and coyote Council members were refusing to move. Wolves and foxes were hesitant (though dad never told me this) as well.

We returned to the large metal dens and were able to open a couple. Mine only had parchment, but we can at least use it for future documentation. The other one (of which there are many) contained the muscle of what I believe to be dead cows. Lots of muscle, but no organs. Still, it'll feed the people just fine as each container had at least 70 carcasses in perfect condition! We all seemed to be in agreement that we'd only send a few carcasses back and see what the Council does with them. We will report the find of hundreds of them in person, disallowing the Council the chance to warp the words.

So, now we return to our original goal of producing a detailed map of the area and ensuring it's safe and secure for the people.
